The inaugural Car Free Day Surrey presented by TransLink was a success on Saturday June 11, 2022! The community of Newton enjoyed a fun-filled day of music, dance performances, family entertainment and activities for the whole family!
 
This FREE event featured musical performances by Ashleigh Ball, daysormay, Meltt, Naduh, The Jins, PEAK, Á;a:líya, Tess Anderson. A new highlight on the Dance Stage was the breakdance battle hosted by Vancouver’s Street Dance Festival, plus drop in performances by City Entertainment dance ensemble, Diamonds in the Rough, and DJ performances by Destineak and DJ Def 3.
 
For the little festival lover, Matt Henry, our favourite comedic juggler captivated audiences, plus performances by Robin Reddy Show, Mom Bop and Story Time with the Surrey Library. Free face painting was provided by Southridge, plus a bounce house in the family zone!
 
You could make you pledge  for a Car Free Summer at the TransLink Zone and learn many ways we can all help care for the planet! There was also be free Mini Golf, Giant Jenga, Connect 4 and other fun activities for all.
 
“Car-Free Day is an internationally recognized brand, enjoyed in major cities across the globe,”said Philip Aguirre, Executive Director of Newton BIA. “This is a way for the community to evolve away from vehicle dependence.”
 
“We want to encourage more people to get out of their cars this summer and experience the region using transit,” said TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn. “Car Free Day is a great opportunity for everyone to visit and experience the best of their neighbourhoods using transit, walking, and cycling.”
 
The whole street was turned into a big beer garden, with beers from Vancouver Island Brewing and coolers from Topo Chico! 
 
Festival goers were encouraged to plan their trip using https://www.translink.ca/trip-planner or use alternative transportation like biking, walking, riding an electric scooter or use Uber / Lyft / Evo.
